Tests cost 90 Euros per dog.
The SDC are also supporting the Dilated Cardiomyopathy [DCM] fund by adding the option to Donate £1.00 on the Championship Show Entry forms.
Any club member who would like to make a donation to this fund can send their contribution to the Treasurer of the SDC - Mrs Anne McDerment who will Deposit it into the DCM fund.
This scheme is being funded by Boehringer Ingelheim,
manufactures of the drugs widely used in the field of DCM.
The main role of the Screening Programme will includeClinical trials on Dobermanns with Occult DCM Free of charge;
To improve the therapy options that are currently available for affected dogs; To establish the frequency of occult DCM in UK Dobermanns to establish the genetic basis of DCM.The DCM Drugs Trial Protected Study in now underway and the 2 Cardiologists in Scotland to contact for further information on this study are:

The study will only be done on dogs within the preclinical stage of DCM (at this stage the dog shows no outward signs of DCM) half the dogs will be given a placebo and the other half will be treated with the drug ‘Pimobendan’. The minute the dog shows any outward signs of DCM they will be taken off of the study and if they were receiving the placebo they would then get the proper drug pimobendan and be treated with this drug free of charge.
Inclusion Criteria – Echocardiographic evidence of preclinical DCM
5 -9 years old (inclusive)
Pure Bred Dobermann .
Male or female; entire or neutered.
Exclusion Criteria – Presence of other cardiac disease.
Presence of thyroid disease.
Clinical signs or history of congestive heart failure.
Previous diagnosis of symptomatic heart failure.
Any clearly defined episode of syncope
(fainting in the previous 6 months).
Abnormal heart rhythms detected on Holter monitor
Evidence of other significant disease..
Animals on cardiovascular or respiratory medication during the previous 6 months.
Animals on medication contra-indicated for the use with pimobendan.
Animals being treated with corticosteroids.
Animals that have received a general anaesthetic in the previous 28 days.
Female dog that is pregnant, lactating or intended for breeding.
